Why I Joined Relay for Life

I’ve been participating in the Relay for Life since 2017.  I was first motivated by the death of my dear friend Sandy Mayer from Pancreatic Cancer, and then the death of my friend Susan Gavens, also from Pancreatic Cancer.  I also have lost relatives from various forms of cancer, including my father, mother-in-law, and two cousins, and friends, including a college roommate Chuck Niedle.

I walk in their memory.

Happily, many family members and friends have obtained successful treatment for their cancers.

I walk for them, too.

This is why I’m raising money for the American Cancer Society (ACS) through Relay for Life to fund research to develop more effective drugs and to provide information and support for patients.

In 2017 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and cured it with surgery.

However, several years before that I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic (CLL) Leukemia.  I have experienced the wonders of newly developed drugs, but there is not now a cure for this disease.  I’m living with it now.

I hope for more drugs for all types of cancer, and especially CLL.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. In 2017 cancer accounted for 21.3 percent of total deaths in this country.  We can fight this.

What you can do

Please join me and my team in supporting a life-saving mission by making a donation to American Cancer Society via Relay for Life.
