About Cantor Weiss

Cantor Cheri Weiss received Smicha/Ordination from the Academy for Jewish Religion, California in May 2018. She holds a BA in English and Theater from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT as well as Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from CSU Northridge. Cantor Weiss lived in Israel for six years, where she studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and was involved in the music business, performing and writing song lyrics for some of Israel’s most popular singers.

Cantor Weiss has worked as a cantorial intern and soloist at a number of synagogues in the San Diego, Los Angeles and Palm Springs areas and has served as High Holy Days cantor at congregations in Houston, Texas and Providence, Rhode Island. Cheri founded the Shirenu Chorus, which she directed for four years, and is the founder of the newly-formed San Diego Jewish Community Choir. She has produced and performed in Jewish music concerts at many venues in San Diego, where she currently resides.

In 2016, Cantor Weiss raised $10,000 to professionally record, self-produce, and distribute the CD “HINENI: Music for the High Holy Days.” Over 1,000 copies of her “HINENI” CD have been provided free of charge to homebound seniors in hospitals, hospices, and retirement homes across the U.S. via chaplains, clergy, Jewish Family Services and Jewish Federations. She is continuing her work bringing Jewish liturgical music to the homebound through the company she founded: Hazzanit, Inc. (
