Why I Joined Relay For Life

This is my first year participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event on July 11, 2020 in Campbell, California.  Why did I join the Relay?  I am celebrating 21 years of being free from Breast Cancer and decided that an excellent way of commemorating this milestone would be to join the Relay For Life of Campbell, a community wide event.  I am walking to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives to this horrible disease, celebrate survivors, support caregivers and help find a cure for cancer.

I have lost way too many of my family and friends to cancer. My mother, Roz Slavitt Novack, lost her battle with Breast Cancer. My dad, Bernie Slavitt and my younger brother, Ken Slavitt, both passed away from Brain Cancer.  My grandma, Rebecca Slavitt, and my aunt Tady Slavitt Gordon, both died of Breast Cancer and both of my grandfathers, David Slavitt and Murray Stein passed away from Stomach Cancer. These losses have affected me profoundly.

In my synagogue, several of my friends, Beverly Pressman, Sandy Mayer and Susan Gavens have died from cancer. These women were amazing professionals and outstanding volunteers and left gaping holes in our hearts. My good friend, Laurie’s daughter, Meredith Thomas, was a wonderful wife and mother. Her life was cut down way too early when she too passed away from Breast Cancer.

By participating in Relay For Life I am raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Every day, the American Cancer Society is helping us stay well by preventing cancer or finding it at its earliest, most treatable stages. They assist families in finding the best resources to help their friend or loved one deal with a diagnosis and their journey to get well. I believe in ACS’s mission to fund vital cancer research, promote preventative screenings, and support those who are currently undergoing treatment and their families.

  What You Can Do
Please join me and my team Congregation Beth David in supporting the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission by making a donation. My goal is $1,800. Please help me reach and, hopefully, surpass this goal. Together we can finish this fight!

Thank you!
