One Community, One Book - As a Driven Leaf
This year, the JCC and other South Bay Jewish organizations, including Beth David, are encouraging everyone to read the novel, As a Driven Leaf, by Milton Steinberg. You don't have to be Jewish to be interested in this story of the struggle between tradition and modernity. It's set in ancient Rome, but its subject – a man torn between two cultures – is also relevant in modern Silicon Valley.
Beth David will hold a book discussion on Sunday, March 30 at 10:15 am (more info). Book discussion groups at the JCC are open to all, and will meet from 6:30-8:30 pm on January 10 and 17. Two study guides are available from the APJCC website at: http://www.svjcc.org/book. For more information, contact Rabbi Joshua Fenton, Director of the APJCC Center for Jewish Life & Learning, at
or 408-357-7430.
In addition, community lectures relevant to this book are scheduled in the APJCC auditorium:
Thursday, January 31, 7:30 pm
Rabbi Dana Magat of Temple Emanu-El and Rabbi Daniel Pressman of Congregation Beth David discuss "Tradition and Modernity: How to Walk the Line"
Thursday, March 27, 7:30 pm
Rabbi Joshua Berkenwald and guest discuss "Faith and Doubt"
Thursday, May 15, 7:30 pm
Rabbi Melanie Aron of Congregation Shir Hadash and guest discuss "Jewish Renegades: Can We Welcome Them Home?"
