Parashat Koraḥ

3 Tammuz, 5778 / June 16, 2018
Triennial Cycle Year II: Num. 16:20-17:24
Ḥumash Etz Ḥayim page 863
Haftarah: 1 Samuel 11:14-12:22, p. 876

    1. (16:20-35) In response to Koraḥ’s challenge, a test is conducted. After the Israelites withdraw from the rebels, the earth splits and swallows up Koraḥ and his followers. Then a fire bursts out and consumes the 250 rebellious Levites.
    2. (17:1-8) As a warning to future generations, the rebels’ copper incense pans are gathered up and beaten into a covering for the altar.
    3. (17:9-15) After further complaints by the Israelites, a plague breaks out among them, but Aaron quickly offers incense to expiate their sins, preventing further casualties.
    4. (17:16-24) Each tribal chieftain is asked to take a wooden staff to the Tent of Meeting. Aaron’s alone sprouts blossoms and almonds, proving that God favors his leadership.
